The history of the establishment of PAI cannot be separated from the establishment of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Sunan Kalijaga because the PAI Study Program is a study program that was established simultaneously with the opening of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Even so, the establishment of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training cannot be separated from the establishment of UIN Sunan Kalijaga because the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training is one of the faculties that was opened for the first time (along with other faculties) along with the establishment of UIN Sunan Kalijaga. For this, we will describe a little about the history of the establishment of UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
Yogyakarta, which once served as the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia, was honored as a University City. Thus, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) was established in Yogyakarta, based on Government Regulation No. 37 of 1950. UGM can be considered as a government gift to nationalists for their services in defending independence. For Islamic groups, government awards were also given in the form of "Faculty of Religion" whose origin came from the Indonesian Islamic University (UII). UII itself was originally named Islamic High School (STI) which was founded on July 18, 1945 and is domiciled in Jakarta. The name STI was changed to UII and inaugurated on March 10, 1948 in Yogyakarta.
At the time of its inauguration, UII had four faculties, namely: the Faculty of Religion, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of Education. The Faculty of Religion was converted into a State Religious College (PTAIN) based on Government Regulation No. 34 of 1950, which was later formed by the Committee for Islamic Higher Education, chaired by KH. Fathurrahman Kafrawi with 11 members.
On September 26, 1951 to coincide with 4 DzulHijjah 1371 H, PTAIN was inaugurated by the Government (Minister of Religion and Minister of PP & K) with the Chairperson of PTAIN Prof. KH. Mohammad Adnan. That's why, the date was used as the date of "Dies Natalis" UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Based on various considerations, PTAIN (Yogyakarta) was merged with the Academy of Religious Sciences (ADIA) in Jakarta, becoming the “State Islamic Institute” al-Djamiah, which was inaugurated in Yogyakarta on August 24, 1960.
At the time of its inauguration, IAIN had 4 faculties, namely the Sharia Faculty (Yogyakarta) with the Dean of Tengku Moh Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, the Ushuludin Faculty (Yogyakarta) with the Dean Prof. Muchtar Yahya, Faculty of Adab (Jakarta) with Dean H Bustami Abdul Ghani; Faculty of Tarbiyah (Jakarta) with the Dean H. Mahmud Junus, and the Chancellor of IAIN at that time was Prof. Mr. RHA Soenarjo. In the second year (1960-1961) four more faculties were opened, namely: the Faculty of Tarbiyah in Yogyakarta, the Faculty of Sharia in Kutaraja Banda Aceh, the Faculty of Sharia in Banjarmasin, and the Faculty of Sharia in Palembang. It can be seen that the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Sunan Kalijaga was opened in the second year of the opening of IAIN in Indonesia, which was between 1960-1961. One year later, in 1962, on September 29, the PAI study program was opened based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion No. 43 of 1960 concerning the Implementation of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) and the Decree of the Minister of Religion no. 2 of 1962 concerning the Opening of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and the Faculty of Adab in Yogyakarta. At that time it was called the Department of Religious Education.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education and the Minister of Religion Number 01/0/SKB/2004 and Number ND/B.V/I/Hk.001/058/04 dated January 23, 2004, which was further strengthened by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 50 of 2004 Date June 21, 2004., IAIN Sunan Kalijaga changed to UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This transformation has encouraged UIN Sunan Kalijaga to make improvements and developments in various fields, including management and academics. Cooperation with various parties both with parties abroad and abroad is also being built
Based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education Number Dj.I/39/2010 concerning the Extension of Permits for the Implementation of Study Programs at the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta in 2010, there was a change from the Department of Islamic Education to the Study Program (Prodi) of Islamic Education (Prodi). PIE).
PAI Study Program has undergone several leadership changes (Prodi management). The following are managers since PAI as a Study Program.
